Rhinoplasty Can Have Varying Emotional Effects PDF Print E-mail

Rhinoplasty, or a nose job, has favorable effects on most patients. Most of them are satisfied with the new look of their nose. This is because the once flawed facial feature, which is a source of lack of self-confidence, is already fixed. A good rhinoplasty can boost self-esteem to a person who feels bad about themselves before the surgery. This is the reason why most rhinoplasty patients are teens or young adults, who are facing confidence issues.

However, not all patients feel good after the surgery. For these people, rhinoplasty is a bad experience. After the surgery, these patients go through depression.  There are many causes of these. One is the discomfort that rhinoplasty brings. While a nose job is not painful, the after-effect will cause much discomfort for a patient. You can feel very congested, as if you have a cold. You can lose your sense of smell and taste too, which can be very upsetting.  In other cases, the medications you’ll be taking after the surgery can cause constipation.

Another reason for feeling down after rhinoplasty is that you are restricted from doing some activities. This is to avoid any complications and injury to the nose. For some people who are physically active, this can be annoying. Another thing is your sleeping pattern will be altered. You have to sleep with your head elevated, almost in an upright position. This can cause discomfort which can lead to a lack of sleep, and thus, you can be irritable and tired.

For an unfortunate minority, real depression can result from the decision to have a nose job. In some cases, this is because they are not satisfied with the resulting nose. Around 10 to 15 percent of patients will have to undergo revision rhinoplasty in order to correct the first nose job. However, there are others, around 30 percent who are not happy with the result but will not get another surgery. A very small portion of patients who experience depression after rhinoplasty surgery are due to underlying mental health conditions such as body dysmorphia.

If you are considering undergoing plastic surgery, you should be ready for all these negative effects. Remind yourself all the positive reasons why you will undergo this kind surgery, so as not to feel depressed. It is common for patients to go through a short period of depression, questioning themselves on why they got a nose job. But all of this will go away when they see the positive results of rhinoplasty. In case you will be unfortunate and get an unsatisfactory nose job, be ready for how to deal with it.
